Since my youth I had always sensed a creepy, twisted undertone to Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, but never have I seen it so perfectly expressed as it is in Jan Švankmajer’s Alice. While other versions capture the playfulness or whimsy of the classic story, the darker themes have not as often been honed in upon.
The storytelling and audio are key ingredients to this nightmarish display, but nothing quite embodies the disturbing factor like the use of stop motion taxidermy animals. I’ve yet to ever see anything like this film, making it a truly singular experience. It makes you feel like you just might have fallen into Wonderland yourself.
Finally, even though it’s a re-telling of an already epic tale, this film in and of itself is a true artistic, awe-inspiring masterpiece. Check it out and let me know what you think!
