“It’s like raaaaaaiiiinn on your wedding day. It’s a free riiiiiiiiide when you’ve already paid.”

Er sorry about that. I just cannot help myself singing this song when I wear this outfit. Or maybe I just can’t help singing this song period. Sorry, Alanis. I’m addicted to your 90s music.

I really do love rocking fashions from yesteryear. Since I use fashion as a medium for self-expression I love anything that makes me feel like I’m traveling back in time, all Doctor Who style. And this outfit is totally a time machine that transports me to my awkward kid days when I was in love with Taylor Hanson and feeling so uncomfortable with my chubby, little ever-changing body. So much so that I wore boys clothes to cover myself up rather than the fun stuff I so wanted to wear.

I feel so sad thinking back to those days. Young Jess felt so uncomfortable, so ashamed of her growing female body. She had gone through puberty at the age of 11, bringing with it a totally new body whilst simultaneously leaving young Jess feeling totally weird compared to her still child-like friends.

She would never have worn the crop tops that pervaded 90s and early 2000s styles. She wanted to, but she didn’t feel pretty enough or skinny enough. But she ached for it anyway, secretly, deep down in her little girl heart.

I can’t rewind time and I don’t want to. We all learn and grow from the things we go through in life, and that to me is invaluable. However, I can give young Jess her fashion dreams come true.
