Intense scenes of gore and violence do not scare me. But the slow, steady hum of disquiet that sits in your gut when you know something is just…off, does.
House of the Devil is the master of just that. It’s been a very long time since I’ve felt so eerily on edge watching a movie. So, when I found myself truly unsettled after seeing this one I knew it was a beautifully unique find that I would love always.
To add to the masterful scaring that it accomplishes, it also is fabulously shot, feeling entirely like it could have been picked right out the 80s when in reality, it came out in 2009.
Ti West, I take my hat off to you, sir. This one was a doozy!
In honor of Halloween take a load off tonight and let yourself be scared in a way that is reminiscent of your childhood days, when shadows in closets, scratching windows, and creaking of wood floors gripped your heart with terror.
Cheers!
